If you have parents that were teenagers in the fifties, you’ve probably seen the pictures in the photo albums of young men in cuffed jeans and white t-shirts under their leather jackets and poodle skirts with chiffon scarves and angora sweaters. Or, maybe you’ve watched ‘Happy Days’ on television enough to know the style that defined the decade. The hot rod culture that was inspired by the fifties and took off back then is still alive and well, transforming into a new cultural experience where people their automobiles from the ground up but leave them somewhat unfinished. This style is called Rat Rod, and rat rod clothing is starting to define a new generation of hot rod enthusiasts.
Blue jeans and white t-shirts with the sleeves rolled up are still the normal attire for the hot rod lover, but each person brings their own little bit of unique style to this everlasting classic look. The love of rockabilly, the theme music for hot rodders, is also very prevalent in the clothing choices and can be seen in the button-down shirts that are decorated across the shoulders. And don’t forget, the members name or nickname is on the front.
Of course rat rod clothing isn’t limited to just the men. Women who have no problem expressing their inner ‘naughty girl’ indulge in wearing leopard-print clothing, red gingham shirts that tie at the belly, and the good old button down sweater. Doc Martins and cat-eye sunglasses are also popular and when all of this is mixed with the clothing styles popular today, you get a very individual and unique look that still has the vibes of the 1950s.
